On Sunday March 1, 2009, a 199th Birthday Party for Fryderyk Chopin was held at the John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre. An engaging lecture-recital entitled, " The Polish Prodigy - Chopin in his Native Land " was presented by Dr. Janet Lopinski, Artistic Director of the Canadian Chopin Festival 2010. Special guest Thomas Yu - Third Prize Winner of the Second Canadian Piano Competition - offered brilliant and sensitive interpretations of Chopin's Andante Spianato and Grande Polonaise, Ballade No. 2 and Berceuse. John Barnum, Music Director & Conductor of Orchestras Mississauga was recognized for his dedication, leadership and vision with the Chopin Festival's "Freddy Award". Greg Glista, Fundraising Director, thanked the guests for their generous support and invited new members to join the "Friends of Chopin". The evening concluded with a birthday cake and candles in anticipation of the celebration next year!
Special celebration of composer and pianist Frederick Chopin's 198th birthday was held at the John Paul II Polish Cultural Centre on Cawthra Rd, on March 2, 2008. The lecture "Chopin's Romances: The Muses who Inspired the Master" was presented by Dr. Janet Lopinski with guest soprano Tina Torlone.
Mayor Hazel McCallion accepted the first Freddy in honour of the contribution she has made to the arts in Mississauga and Canada.

Ms. Wong was first prize winner of the Junior Division of the First Canadian Chopin Competition in 1999. She is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of British Columbia and is currently studying at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
She will perform works by Mozart, Ravel and Chopin
